We invite you to be a part of Career Discovery 2017!
Central AlabamaWorks, Region 5 (Autauga, Bullock, Chambers, Coosa, Dallas, Elmore, Lee, Lowndes, Macon, Montgomery, Perry, Russell, and Tallapoosa counties) has a diverse and unique set of industries, businesses, non-profits and career opportunities. On September 14-15, 2017, Central AlabamaWorks will present its annual career exploration event, Career Discovery, at the Southern Union State Community College Opelika Campus.
Career Discovery is an initiative that brings together regional business and industry, non-profits and volunteers throughout the region to present an interactive, hands-on career exploration event for our public, private and home-schooled eighth grade students. We are targeting eighth grade students in order to offer them a fuller understanding of the career and college choices available to them in our region and to help prepare them to make course selection choices as they enter the ninth grade.
The industry, business and career opportunities showcased at Career Discovery 2017 will be divided into eleven career clusters (click the icons below to learn more):
Each career cluster will offer interactive, hands-on activities that allow students to examine particular jobs, courses of study, and career fields. They can explore Energy and Utilities by riding a bike to power lights, music and a bubble machine. They can experiment with Architecture and Construction by drafting plans for a bridge or building a brick wall. They can personally experience Communication and Information Technology by reading the news or weather in front of a camera! Interactive, hands-on activities will connect fun learning with real world application. Additionally, each student will receive a Career Discovery Student Guide, containing information on what it takes for career success and an introduction to our eleven career clusters.
Career Discovery 2017 will host over 5,000 students, teachers, counselors, parent chaperones, volunteers, sponsors, partners and exhibitors.
